TMEIC Corporation Americas has announced the launch of its E-Tanker, a mobile charging solution designed to accelerate port decarbonization by converting rubber-tired gantry (RTG) cranes from diesel to battery-electric power. The new system transitions terminal equipment to cleaner operations quickly and cost-effectively, bypassing the need for extensive yard redesigns, grid upgrades, or weeks of operational downtime typical of traditional retrofits.
The E-Tanker is a multi-component solution consisting of a mobile lithium-ion battery charging unit, high-energy battery blocks, and a charging station. The entire setup is managed by the company’s intelligent Fleet Management System (FMS), which provides real-time visibility into yard operations, including battery state of charge, job assignments, and charging schedules to maximize terminal efficiency.
Housed in a standard 40-foot container and transported by terminal tractors, a single E-Tanker unit integrates into existing operations and can serve multiple pieces of yard equipment. The system’s compact battery blocks easily adapt to existing cranes, offering a scalable pathway for terminal operators to reduce diesel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
