The Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) has become the first port in Malaysia to commission and operate electric prime movers, integrating the initial 21 units from Terberg Tractors Malaysia into service. This milestone supports horizontal container movement and advances the port’s long-term decarbonisation agenda alongside an expansion programme aimed at reaching 16.3m TEUs annually by 2029.
A previous proof of concept conducted between 2023 and 2024 demonstrated that each electric prime mover generates 4,000 kgCO2eq per month, a 48% emissions reduction compared to conventional units, while simultaneously achieving a 57% reduction in monthly operational costs per unit. The remaining vehicles from a total procurement of 52 units are scheduled for progressive delivery through the end of September 2026.
This initiative contributes to PTP’s broader pathway to reduce carbon emissions by 45% by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. The electrification effort builds upon the port’s existing deployment of 245 electric rubber-tyred gantry cranes and complements ongoing international sustainability collaborations such as the IMO GreenVoyage2050 initiative.
