Rio Brasil Terminal (RBT), International Container Terminal Services, Inc.’s (ICTSI) operation in the Port of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, has taken delivery of two new quay cranes. The acquisition is part of the terminal’s ongoing expansion and modernization program, which is scheduled for completion in 2029. The introduction of these assets increases RBT’s total number of quay cranes to six, aiming to improve overall vessel handling capability, service quality, and operational efficiency across its berths.
The newly acquired equipment allows the terminal to service larger ships of up to 400 meters in length overall and with capacities reaching 20,000 TEUs. This upgrade directly addresses the significant growth in container volumes at the Port of Rio since 2023, driven by a robust increase in Brazilian foreign trade and a regional trend toward larger vessels calling the east coast of South America.
In addition to new port equipment, the broader infrastructure program includes expanding and unifying storage yards, reorganizing operational areas for optimized internal process flows, and implementing automation and advanced technologies. Once fully implemented, the expansion will boost RBT’s annual capacity to 750,000 TEUs, mitigating bottlenecks in other ports and solidifying the Port of Rio as a key logistics hub for Brazil’s Southwest and Midwest regions.
