The Port of Galveston has announced a proposal to develop 357 acres of waterfront land on Pelican Island, aiming to unlock the area’s potential for maritime and industrial growth. The project centers on the construction of a multi-use berth, including a 1,000-foot-long berth and 500-foot-long dock, designed to provide critical logistics support for a $1b shipbuilding project by Davie Defense – Gulf Copper. The development is intended to be funded through a combination of port operating reserves, federal grants, and state grants, with an estimated cost of $40m.
Beyond supporting the immediate needs of the shipbuilding expansion, the proposed infrastructure aims to enhance regional cargo handling capacity and facilitate roll-on/roll-off (ro-ro) operations. A key component of the plan includes the development of an LNG marine fuel bunkering site to supply cleaner fuel to both cruise and cargo ships, which is expected to improve air quality and attract newer cruise vessels to the port. Additionally, the initiative serves as a catalyst for long-term discussions regarding the replacement of the outdated Pelican Island Bridge and necessary road improvements to support increased traffic.
