The Panama Canal Authority has announced forthcoming adjustments to the maximum authorized draft for vessels transiting the Neopanamax locks. Effective August 26, 2026, the maximum draft will be reduced to 48 ft (14.63 m), followed by a further reduction to 47.5 ft (14.48 m) on September 3, 2026.
These measures are driven by current water levels and projected conditions in Gatun Lake, serving as part of an ongoing strategy to ensure long-term operational sustainability. Despite these adjustments, the number of daily vessel transits will remain unaffected by the new requirements.
The decision follows hydrological analyses and operational planning informed by data from the 2023–2024 period. The Panama Canal Authority continues to monitor weather patterns and potential impacts of the El Niño phenomenon to determine if further water management measures are necessary.
