ORLEN and the Port of Gdynia Authority have signed an agreement to explore the use of LNG and bioLNG as marine vessel fuels along the Polish coast. The partnership will evaluate potential market demand, infrastructure solutions, and necessary operational and regulatory requirements to advance alternative marine fuels in the region.
The collaboration will review the feasibility of waterside bunkering, including ship-toship operations, alongside the needs of scheduled ferry, container, and ro-ro services. This initiative supports the transition of ORLEN’s fuel portfolio through 2035 and addresses tightening greenhouse gas requirements under the FuelEU Maritime framework that took effect in 2025.
Robert Soszyński, Vice President of the ORLEN Management Board, Operations, stated that the cooperation forms part of a wider transformation where gas acts as a transitional fuel, while Piotr Gorzeński, CEO of the Port of Gdynia Authority, emphasized the importance of preparing ports for diverse future energy technologies. The long-term initiative aims to build competitive strengths across the entire value chain and lay the foundations for an alternative marine fuels ecosystem in Poland.
