Liebherr Selected to Modernize Shipyard Infrastructure at Damen Shiprepair Curaçao

Share:

Curaçao is strengthening its position as a strategic maritime hub in the Caribbean through a comprehensive €20 million (23 million USD) modernization program at Damen Shiprepair Curaçao (DSCu) and CDM Holding. Minister of Economic Development, Roderick Middelhof, recently marked two major milestones: the official commissioning of new dock pump systems and the announcement of Liebherr as the preferred bidder for the supply of modern rail-mounted tower cranes. This investment initiative, supported in part by a Dutch government grant, focuses on renewing critical infrastructure to enhance operational efficiency and long-term industrial competitiveness in the region.

The partnership with Liebherr involves replacing aging equipment, including a crane in operation since 1982, with advanced tower cranes designed to substantially increase lifting capacity, precision, and safety standards. Commercial terms for the first crane acquisition have already been agreed upon, and a Letter of Intent has been signed between DSCu, CDM Holding, and Liebherr. These new assets feature robust designs and advanced drive systems that will streamline material handling and support complex maintenance and conversion work on large vessels.

In addition to the crane upgrades, the shipyard has integrated high-performance pump systems supplied by KSB to serve the Beatrix and Antillia dry docks. This infrastructure renewal significantly improves dock turnaround times and energy efficiency, allowing for faster inspection and repair services. By combining these technological advancements, the modernization program aims to create sustainable, high-quality employment and ensure that Curaçao remains a leading platform for maritime services amidst shifting global shipping routes.
