Associated Terminals and Liebherr Maritime Cranes have reached a major sustainability milestone with the christening of two CBG 500 E all-electric transshipment cranes in New Orleans. These cranes, mounted on next-generation barges, represent the first of their kind on the Lower Mississippi River, aiming to transform regional river logistics through zero local exhaust emissions. This collaboration combines Liebherr’s engineering innovation with Associated Terminals’ commitment to advanced, eco-friendly transshipment infrastructure.
The CBG 500 E cranes are designed for high-capacity bulk handling, featuring a lattice boom with up to 50 meters outreach and grab capacities of 90 tonnes in sheltered waters. Efficiency is further enhanced by the LiCaTronic energy recovery system, which captures energy during braking or load lowering, while the purpose-built barges utilize hybrid-ready power systems and keel cooling technology to minimize environmental impact. Following the delivery of the first unit in summer 2025 and the second at the end of the year, both cranes are now set to provide high-performance, electrified operations for the region’s maritime industry.
This strategic partnership underscores a long-term commitment to modernizing inland waterway logistics and reducing carbon footprints in the United States. By integrating remote diagnostics and ergonomic designs, the project ensures operational safety alongside technical excellence. The initiative serves as a benchmark for sustainable cargo handling, demonstrating how collaborative engineering can successfully align industrial performance with environmental responsibility for years to come.
