Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) has activated a 5G campus network at its Container Terminal Altenwerder (CTA) in Hamburg, implemented in collaboration with Deutsche Telekom and Ericsson as part of the PROCON-5G project. Since the end of May 2026, the network has been operational across an area exceeding one sq km, supporting critical logistics processes, real-time applications, and providing a digital testing ground for port innovations.
Designed to meet the specific requirements of a highly automated terminal, the infrastructure connects vehicles, sensors, mobile devices, and IT systems in real time. Based on the Ericsson Private 5G Campus solution, the network operates independently of the public mobile network within a locally allocated frequency spectrum, ensuring stable, high-performance communication even under heavy use with the capacity for flexible on-site scaling.
The PROCON-5G project is part of the “Digitale Testfelder in Häfen” funding scheme, an initiative of the German Federal Ministry of Transport (BMV) managed by project sponsor TÜV Rheinland. Additional partners supported the deployment, including Lufthansa Industry Solutions (LHIND), which provided project management, and Hamburg Port Consulting GmbH (HPC), which handled funding management.
