Hapag-Lloyd has signed an agreement with the Hamburg Port Authority to use shore power across all terminals in the Port of Hamburg. This initiative marks a crucial step toward lowering vessel emissions in ports and advancing the company’s objective of achieving net-zero fleet emissions by 2045.
The operational rollout has already commenced, with the vessels “Al Muraykh” and “Tihama” successfully utilizing shore power during port calls on the Asia-North Europe Service NE2. Shore power technology enables appropriately equipped ships to satisfy their onboard electricity requirements via the local onshore grid while berthed.
Currently, approximately 35% of Hapag-Lloyd’s active fleet features full equipment for shore power operations. The shipping line continues to ensure that all newbuilds come ready for shore power while actively retrofitting compatible vessels within its existing fleet wherever infrastructure availability permits.
