Antwerp Approves Plans for New Container Cluster

Share:

The Flemish Government has approved the draft project decision for the Left Bank Container Cluster (CCL) in Antwerp, marking a significant milestone for the Extra Container Handling Capacity Antwerp (ECA) project. This initiative aims to increase the port’s container handling capacity by 7m TEU to accommodate rising global demand and ensure the facility remains competitive.

The core of the project involves constructing a second tidal dock adjacent to the existing Deurganck Dock and developing the Three Docks logistics area. Additional components include filling in the Northern Cut Dock for a new terminal, establishing a marshalling yard for rail freight, and creating nature areas in Doelpolder South and Prosperpolder South.

The development integrates environmental and community protections, including a landscaped buffer zone with an earth berm to mitigate noise and light pollution. A public consultation period is currently underway, running until 10 August 2026, after which feedback will be assessed before the Flemish Government moves toward a definitive project decision.
