Canada Place Celebrates 40 Years with Record Cruise Season

Share:

The Canada Place cruise terminal in Vancouver is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, coinciding with a record-breaking season that is expected to see 1.4m passengers pass through the facility. Since welcoming its first ship in April 1986, the terminal has become a premier homeport for Alaskan cruises, facilitating travel for over 30m people across four decades. The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority highlights this milestone as a testament to the long-standing collaboration between the port, cruise lines, and local industry partners.

Operations are scaling up for the summer peak, with nearly 360 cruise ship visits scheduled for the year. During the busiest periods, the terminal will handle between 40k and 50k passengers nearly every weekend from Friday to Monday. The season is projected to reach a historic peak from September 18 to 21, when a record 56k travelers are expected in a single weekend. This surge in activity overlaps with Vancouver’s role as a host city for seven FIFA World Cup 2026 matches.

The record-breaking season provides a significant boost to the local economy, with each cruise ship visit injecting approximately $3m into the region. These funds support various sectors, including Canadian food suppliers, hotels, restaurants, and tourist attractions.
