APM Terminals has officially marked the groundbreaking for the APM Terminals Laldia in Chattogram, transitioning a major USD 550m public-private partnership investment between Bangladesh and Denmark into active construction. Delivered in collaboration with the Chittagong Port Authority and local partner QNS Container Services Ltd., the facility is scheduled to become fully operational in 2030 under a model where the strategic port asset remains under Bangladeshi ownership while leveraging international private expertise.
Designed to transform regional supply chains and ease severe congestion, the terminal will inject over 800k TEU of new annual handling capacity and accommodate larger container vessels of up to 6k TEU, effectively doubling the current limit of around 2.8k TEU. The infrastructure development directly supports the country’s export economy by improving turnaround times, lowering logistics costs, and providing the deep-water access required by key manufacturing sectors.
As one of Bangladesh’s first energy-efficient and low-emission maritime gateways, the project integrates electrified cargo-handling equipment, solar power installations, and shore-power-ready systems to meet stringent environmental standards. The development is projected to generate over 1k jobs during construction and more than 500 permanent operational roles, while establishing dedicated apprenticeship programmes to cultivate local maritime talent.
