SC Ports has announced plans to expand its roll-on/roll-off (ro-ro) operations to the rail-served North Charleston Terminal. This expansion is designed to further support the state’s expanding automotive industry and enhance supply chain fluidity for advanced manufacturers who rely on the Port of Charleston. SC Ports’ Board of Directors initiated the project by voting to approve the design contract.
The project aligns with SC Ports’ commitment to develop infrastructure capable of generating immediate revenue. This approach enables the port to handle cargo onsite several years ahead of its long-term initiatives to expand container capacity at the North Charleston Terminal. Demolition of the adjacent former paper mill site, which was acquired by the port in 2024, is scheduled to begin this summer. Preparation of the terminal for ro-ro operations will commence in 2027, with full completion anticipated in 2028.
