UK Government Backs Port Talbot as Floating Offshore Wind Hub

Share:

The UK Government and Associated British Ports (ABP) have reached an agreement on terms for funding the development of major floating offshore wind (FLOW) infrastructure at Port Talbot. This strategic milestone, subject to Competition and Markets Authority clearance, aims to transform the port into a primary industrial hub for the Celtic Sea. The site will provide the large-scale manufacturing, assembly, and marshalling capacity required to support upcoming gigawatt-scale FLOW projects.

The investment is expected to unlock hundreds of millions of pounds in industry funding and drive large-scale industrial regeneration across South Wales. By enabling international manufacturers to establish operations at the port, the project will strengthen the UK’s energy security and position the country as a global leader in floating wind technology. This development is projected to create thousands of high-quality jobs and foster significant supply chain growth throughout the wider region.

The agreement follows the recent Celtic Sea leasing round and complements ABP’s expanding offshore wind portfolio, including partnerships with RWE and Vestas. Government officials and industry leaders emphasized that the infrastructure at Port Talbot is critical for the efficient deployment of clean, homegrown power. The initiative underscores a long-term commitment to utilizing Wales’ deep waters and wind resources to meet national renewable energy targets.
