Black Sea Logistics Revolution: DP World Constanța Boosts Capacity with Electric Liebherr Cranes

Share:

DP World Constanța has significantly upgraded its operational capabilities by taking delivery of two state-of-the-art Liebherr LHM 600 mobile harbour cranes. As the operator of the largest container terminal on the Black Sea, this strategic investment allows the Romanian port to handle heavier and more complex cargo. The new equipment is designed to transition the terminal into a versatile multimodal gateway for Eastern Europe, facilitating smoother connections between sea, rail, and road networks.

The highlight of this delivery is the cranes’ specialized configuration for tandem operations. Utilizing Liebherr’s “Sycratronic” assistance system, the two LHM 600 units can perform synchronized lifts of up to 400 tonnes. This high-capacity performance is essential for the growing project cargo sector, particularly for moving oversized industrial machinery and wind turbine components. Furthermore, customized double supporting pads were engineered to adapt the cranes to the specific structural load-bearing requirements of the Constanța berths.

Sustainability and safety are at the core of this infrastructure upgrade. Each crane is powered by an advanced electric drive system, drastically reducing local emissions and aligning with global decarbonization goals, while a diesel backup ensures 24/7 operational continuity. To enhance situational awareness, the cranes are equipped with integrated 360-degree camera systems. This “three-in-one” platform allows the port to switch seamlessly between container handling, bulk cargo, and heavy-lift assignments without compromising efficiency or cycle times.
