Panama Canal Records Transit and Revenue Surge

Share:

The Panama Canal registered growth across vessel traffic, tonnage, and revenues for fiscal year 2026, reflecting sustained global trade demand and operational adaptation following recent climate disruptions. Total annual revenue climbed 16.6% to 6.6bn, supported by strong momentum in the energy shipping and containership segments during the twelve-month period ending September 2026.

Operational volume expanded to 13,951 transits, up 4.1% from 13,404 crossings recorded in FY2025. Cargo tonnage rose 6.5% to 521m Panama Canal Universal Measurement System (PC/UMS) tons compared to 489.2m PC/UMS tons in the prior fiscal period, with larger-capacity Neopanamax locks accounting for 52.2% of total tonnage after an 8.2% segment increase.

Operating parameters held steady with a 50-foot maximum draft maintained across the dry season. Bolstered by water management initiatives and watershed rainfall approaching typical levels, the administration immediately reinstated the Last-Minute Reservation service for Panamax locks, providing non-booked vessels additional access to unallocated transit slots.
