Belfast Harbour has become the first marina in the UK to deploy an Aquapod, an innovative system designed to capture and remove litter, natural debris, and microplastics directly at the waterline. Developed by Northern Ireland-based firm NETZERO Alchemists, the device operates just below the water’s surface, reducing the need for intensive manual cleanup efforts in busy marina areas.
The Aquapod integrates Clean Impact View software, which monitors collected materials over time to provide data on debris volume and composition while preventing wildlife from entering the unit. This deployment supports the harbour’s ongoing environmental stewardship initiatives, including its oyster restoration program and the effort to maintain Blue Flag Marina accreditation.
